Who Will Tell Your Story??? Reminiscent Therapy

As a Compassionate Caregiver, I can tell you firsthand that is a question on the minds of many seniors as they come face to face with mortality. “Who will tell my story?”

Some seek to preserve their history and legacy through the written word: prose, fact, fiction, and poetry. What is written can never be unwritten, and for generations of writers, putting pen to paper (or digit to key, in today's case) is as good a way to secure an everlasting thought which will, hopefully, live on generations after we are all gone.

I am sending credit to “Inside Labrador” more specifically Dillon Collins as their Editor-in-chief.

They inspired this post as it relates to the business I am in. The business of people. Amazing, complicated, happy, sad, fun, fearful people, with a lifetime of experience. I can tell you I laugh and cry quite regularly, with the stuff shared with me. ❤️❤️❤️As Forest Gump said “ Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get”.

My client Gordie prefers an oral medium: campfire tales, recitations and songs passed down from generation to generation. He prides himself on storytelling for keeping tradition, culture and history alive. An a veteran CBC Broadcaster he has many, many adventures for sharing.

It can be stories of greatness, of tragedy and triumph or loss and gain. I feel blessed as a Companionship caregiver because reminiscent therapy is a real thing and my clients know their stories are kept alive. I can help them continue to take pride in the memories so precious to them.

So perhaps next time you are with your senior loved one, make a mental note to remember “reminiscent therapy”, it’s a fancy name for something very simple. Throw the term out the window and start a conversation about their life and experiences. You could get a best selling novel. More to the point, that time you are sharing is part of their legacy.

Have a brilliant afternoon, and help them tell their story!
